Original founders celebrate history and development of Suncadia Resort
AUTOGRAPHED by Co-Authors Bill Peare & Mike Moyer, with Contributing Author John Hempelmann
Kittitas County Connection: Suncadia resort is located in Upper Kittitas County.
THIS BOOK tells the story of how the Trendwest Resorts management team envisioned a 6,400-acre Master Planned Resort called MountainStar, near Roslyn and Cle Elum, Washington; how Trendwest obtained approv- als to develop the property as the first Master Planned Resort in the State of Washington after the 1990 Growth Management Act; how com- munity support was critical to obtaining these approvals; how the development of the resort has benefited the local communities, Kittitas County, and the state in revitalizing the econo- my with jobs, local business, and increased tax base; and how the resort has also revitalized the environment by better managed water use, improved standards of wastewater treatment, habitat development, and habitat protection; and finally, how the vision and benefits con- tinue to be fulfilled under the subsequent de- veloper, Lowe Destination Development, as Suncadia. The initial question of “to be or not to be?” that confronted the project has been answered most positively.
This purchase benefits local students

About the Authors:

In September 1996, Trendwest Resort’s President, Bill Peare, negotiated the purchase of the former Plum Creek 7,500-acre property neighboring Roslyn, Wash. He then appointed Mike Moyer, Sr. VP of Trendwest Resorts, to head the permitting and community relations effort in obtaining approvals for a master planned resort on the property. They selected John Hempelmann as primary land use attorney, Joe Mentor as water rights attorney, and Steve Lathrop as local attorney. In about seven years, at a cost of $85 million, Bill and Mike, with their highly qualified and motivated team of multi-disciplined professionals, successfully obtained the required approvals, including water rights, for what became the 6400 acre MountainStar Resort, now Suncadia. Today, as two octogenarian gentlemen, Bill and mike search their memories and files to co-author and publish this book with the help of many who have been involved, including the current management team at Suncadia.
