Description
A Day in the Life of a Country Vet
by Dr. Fred Newschwander DVM (aka “Dr. Fred”)
“More mostly true stories and anecdotes about livestock, pets, people, and places from the life and career of a retired mixed animal veterinarian”
Dr. Fred was born in 1943 in the Ellensburg, WA parking lot of the Safeway Grocery Store. At that time, however, it was the site of a small doctor’s hospital. After high school he went east intending to get a PhD in mathematics. Plans changed and after Army time and 10 years of post high school education, he obtained a DVM from Washington State University. He says, “The mathematics proved useful because veterinarians have to be able to count at lease as high as 2 and 4.” After six years practicing in British Columbia, where he Learned to admire maple leaves and say “Eh”, he returned to Ellensburg in time for the Mount St. Helens eruption. He established Mt. Stuart Animal Hospital and 31 years later retired in the country to his horses, dog, and computer. This second book takes inspiration from his dog, Piper and horses, Slider and Morticia, “They make sure l get Out of bed each morning to feed them. He feels fortunate and says,” Given an opportunity for a do over, I would choose the same career path but hopefully spend less time getting there.
